African American Man in Marine Corps Officer Dress

Our Son

Damasta Xavier Altman (March 2, 1996 – May 20, 2022) was a remarkable Son, Brother and Marine. Damasta was scholar, and friend whose presence left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. A man of quiet strength, deep thoughtfulness, and natural leadership, he lived a life defined by integrity, curiosity, service, and love.

Born in Riverdale, Georgia in 1996, to parents Monica Childs and Cal Altman, Damasta Xavier Altman developed into a remarkable young man defined by curiosity, compassion, and heart. Damasta grew up fascinated by airplanes, the world around him, and the possibilities of life. His early years were filled with creativity, philosophical conversations, and a natural ability to bring people together. Even as a child, he displayed the focus, discipline, and heart that would later define his journey.

Driven by a desire to serve his country, Damasta began his path toward the United States Marine Corps in the 11th and 12th grades through the Navy JROTC program at Luella High School, where he graduated. After graduation, he immediately pursued his commission. He enrolled at Georgia State University and completed his ROTC training through a cross-enrollment program hosted at Georgia Tech. His college years reflected both his intellect and his determination, balancing academic work with the demanding training and leadership development required of future officers.

Damasta went on to complete Officer Candidates School on July 8, 2017, and later graduated from The Basic School in Quantico on June 15, 2019. His achievements in the Marine Corps were a profound source of pride—both to him and to those who loved him. Throughout his service, he carried the Marine ethos with humility, honor, and quiet confidence.

He was deeply connected to his siblings—Athena, herself a Marine, along with Bruce, Makeba, and America—who saw him as both a role model and a hero. Whether helping them, debating ideas over dinner, or cheering them on in their own milestones, Damasta approached family with loyalty, sincerity, and a depth of love that shaped every relationship he had.

He loved sailing, biking, running, filmmaking, and the simple joys of being with the people he cared about. He had a unique ability to energize a room, to surprise those he loved, and to leave an imprint through every small shared moment—from baking his first birthday cake at 26 to appearing at the door dressed as Spider-Man one Halloween.

Damasta’s story is also one of courage in the face of personal struggle. Those closest to him knew his heart, his dreams, and the battles he carried quietly. His passing in 2022 was devastating to his family and all who loved him, leaving behind memories that continue to shine with love, pride, and longing.
